The guide to perfect hair extension maintenance!
Nobody is perfect, and Mother Nature is no exception to the rule... Is your hair too flat? Is it growing at a disastrous speed? Hair extensions are a miracle solution, provided that you scrupulously follow certain maintenance rules.
Let's start with the basics: hair extensions are strands of hair that you add to your own hair. The idea is to give them length, volume or even both at the same time! Concretely, there are two types of extensions. Those made from synthetic hair, or even animal fibers, and those made from natural hair. To preserve your hair and obtain a better result, it is better to favor natural extensions. But the latter require rigorous maintenance, we take stock.
Hair Extension Care: Detangling and Brushing
This is the golden rule: extensions must be detangled and brushed every day, morning and evening, on dry hair. We start by regularly detangling with the fingers, and we arm ourselves with a brush capable of preventing the formation of knots at the attachment points. We opt for a soft brush, preferably with boar bristles, or a large comb, if we have frizzy hair.
As for the actual brushing, hold the extensions firmly at mid-length, and brush around the attachment points. Be careful, if you encounter resistance, do not pull too hard, at the risk of unhooking the extensions, or even tearing the hair at the roots!
Hair Extensions Care: Washing
One to two shampoos are necessary each week, and always after having detangled the hair beforehand.
Washing is done with lukewarm water, because hot water dries out the extensions, and keeping your head straight, to avoid the formation of knots. Regarding the shampoo itself, there are two possibilities: a special hair extension product, to better nourish them, or your traditional shampoo, making sure that it is sufficiently gentle and silicone-free. Silicones tend to make the attachment points slip.
Rub gently from roots to ends, then rinse thoroughly, always with lukewarm water, and always with your head upright.
Hair Extensions Care: Mask or Conditioner
After each shampoo, it is recommended to apply a silicone-free mask or conditioner, corresponding to your natural hair type. The goal is to nourish the hair and facilitate detangling. Apply the mask or conditioner along the entire length, avoiding the fixing points.
Hair Extensions Care: Drying
Drying should be gradual. Start by dabbing them with a towel, without massaging them, to prevent them from getting tangled. Then let them air dry, or use a hair dryer if you really can't do otherwise. In this case, keep a distance of 15-20 cm and use cold air so as not to unglue the extensions.
Hair Extensions Care: Before Bed
Before going to bed, brush your hair and spray it with a moisturizing and detangling treatment. Then tie it up in a braid or ponytail.
Hair Extensions Maintenance: Special Cases
Can you color hair extensions? Yes, but be careful, you should trust a specialized hairdresser, equipped with suitable products. You can't do anything alone!
How to maintain extensions during the summer ? Protect yourself from the drying effects of the sun, chlorine and sea water by tying your hair up every time you go swimming and spraying a silicone-free sunscreen spray up to four times a day. Rinse with fresh water and shampoo before going to bed.
By following these tips carefully, you will be able to keep your extensions for between 4 and 6 months, depending on how quickly your hair grows.
